Across State Lines: The NWSL Returns

The National Women’s Soccer League returned to action this week with the start of the Challenge Cup in suburban Salt Lake City and players from the Kansas City were well represented in the first games of the tournament. In the opener, Lee’s Summit native, Addisyn Merrick started for the two time defending champions, the North Carolina Courage. Merrick went 57 minutes in her professional debut for the Courage as they won 2-1 over the Portland Thorns. In the late game on the opening night, Dorian Bailey from Mission, Kansas was a substitute for the Washington Spirit as they topped the Chicago Red Stars. On Tuesday the other four NWSL teams competing in the tournament took the field with four Kansas City players suiting up for the Houston Dash as they took on the Utah Royals. Liberty native Shea Groom scored for the Dash in their 3-3 tie. Also featuring in the game for the Dash was Haley Hanson from Overland Park, who spent the winter in Australia playing in the W-League. Coming on as a substitute for the Dash was CeCe Kizer who played the final 10 minutes for the Dash.
