Sporting Kansas City announced yesterday that Johnny Russell and Felipe Gutierrez had received their green cards. The pair will no longer take up international roster spots for the club.
Russell has made 60 league appearances for the club over his three years now with the club, scoring 19 goals in that time. He made his 50th league start for the club in Sporting’s last game back in March against the Houston Dynamo.
Gutierrez is also in his third year in Kansas City, but has had this season cut short with knee surgery that will keep him out for the rest of the season. Over his time with the club, Gutierrez has made 52 league appearances for the club, 49 of those being starts, and scored 19 goals for Sporting as well. He was named the club’s Most Valuable Player in 2019.
This leaves Sporting with seven international players on their roster as the club gets ready to depart for Orlando for the MLS is Back Tournament on Saturday. The internationals on Sporting’s roster now: Botond Barath, Andreu Fontas, Gadi Kinda, Luis Martins, Alan Pulido, Roberto Puncec, and Winston Reid.
