What We Want to Happen Today 10/2

A look at today’s MLS action.

MLS: Sporting Kansas City at FC Dallas Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

After a mid week game week where all MLS teams played in one competition or another on Wednesday night we have a divided schedule between Saturday and Sunday for teams. The big match up for Sporting Kansas City isn’t until Sunday evening after Sporting has taken the field against the Houston Dynamo. That game, the Colorado Rapids at the Seattle Sounders will be important viewing for KC fans. Before we get to that point though there are six games today that do have some potential effects on Kansas City. Here’s what we want to happen in today’s action.

Salt Lake at Austin

What we want to happen: Austin win

Very simple answer here, Austin FC cannot catch Sporting Kansas City’s point total of 49. Real Salt Lake meanwhile sit 10 points behind Sporting. I know for most KC fans it’s not going to be hard rooting against Salt Lake.

Atlanta at Montreal

What we want to happen: draw

Atlanta United sit 10 points behind KC on 39 while CF Montreal sit 12 points back on 37. Better to let neither team gain too much ground in closing the gap on KC in a hypothetical MLS Cup match up.

New York at Cincinnati

What we want to happen: Cincinnati win

Again simple answer here as FC Cincinnati, sitting on 20 points, is unable to catch KC’s point total. The New York Red Bulls meanwhile, can technically still reach 55 points this season, so again, cheer for the team that can’t catch KC.

DC at Orlando

What we want to happen: draw

Another situation where Kansas City don’t want either team to get all three points. DC United sit on 40 while Orlando City sit on 39, so for KC fans it is probably better that neither team gets all three points.

Minnesota at Dallas

What we want to happen: Dallas win

After Sporting’s win on Wednesday night in Dallas, FC Dallas can no longer catch Sporting on points. So it’s another situation of cheering for the team that can’t catch KC as Minnesota sit 12 points back currently with eight games left to play.

SJ at Vancouver

What we want to happen: Draw

Both teams cans still catch Kansas City on points as the San Jose Earthquakes sit on 33 points from 27 games and the Vancouver Whitecaps sit on 34 from 26. Against having neither team gain all three points is the important part here.
