Across State Lines: De Jong Retires From Professional Soccer

Former Sporting Kansas City outside back and winger, Marcel De Jong has called time on his career as a professional soccer player. The 34 year old brought an end to his 17 year career that began back in 2004 in the Netherlands. After playing for Helmond Sport and Roda JC, De Jong moved to the German Bundesliga with FC Augsburg before joining Sporting in the 2015 season. De Jong was expected to challenge Seth Sinovic for the starting left back spot, in what seemed like an ongoing saga for Peter Vermes to replace the KC native, Sinovic. De Jong though made just 13 appearances in his one season in Kansas City, scoring one goal for the club.

Sporting and De Jong agreed to terminate his contract ahead of the start of the 2016 season and De Jong joined the Ottawa Fury in the NASL for their season. By the summer though De Jong had returned to MLS, joining the Vancouver Whitecaps. De Jong was with the Whitecaps through the 2018 season before the two agreed to part ways ahead of the 2019 season. De Jong has spent the last two years in the Canadian Premier League with Pacific FC though a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2019 limited him to just nine appearances before retiring. De Jong was also a regular with the Canadian national team, earning 56 caps over his career.

In other news this week, USL Championship teams continue to fill their roster and former Sporting players are signing with new and old teams. Camden Riley has joined up again with Wan Kuzain, signing with Rio Grande Valley FC for this season. James Musa has signed back with Phoenix Rising, who he played with before joining Minnesota United last season. Finally, Amobi Okugo has signed back with Austin Bold FC for the 2021 season.
