Across State Lines: Taylor Joins Real Salt Lake as an Assistant Coach

Former Kansas City Wizards first round draft pick, Matt Taylor has joined the MLS coaching ranks, joining Real Salt Lake as an assistant coach. Taylor, who had a long club career in the German lower divisions after stints with the Wizards and Chivas USA, had been an assistant at UCLA before joining the staff for RSL. Taylor played just one season for the Wizards after being drafted out of UCLA in 2004. He made 17 appearances and four starts as the Wizards won the Western Conference and the US Open Cup, and advanced to MLS Cup where they lost 3-2 to DC United. Taylor scored three goals that season, but may be more remembered for some misses after coming on as a substitute in MLS Cup when KC was trailing by a goal. Taylor was left exposed in the expansion draft for Chivas and RSL and was selected by Chivas with the 11th of 20 picks. Taylor spent three years with Chivas before joining the Portland Timbers in the USL. He then moved to Germany where he played for seven different clubs in the German lower divisions from 2008 until he retired in 2017, including SC Paderborn, where Khiry Shelton played after leaving KC in 2018.
