2021 Season Preview: Colorado Rapids

Russell Lansford-USA TODAY Sports

It seems like Colorado was the hipster pick to make a playoff run last year and if you listen to the nerds on Extratime Radio, the Rapids are set for a great 2021.

2020 Stats:

Leading scorers: Cole Bassett (5), Jonathan Lewis (5), Andre Shinyashiki (4)

Leading assists: Cole Bassett (5), Jack Price (4), Diego Rubio (3)

Transfers in:

Traded for Michael Barrios from Dallas. Barrios is famously the 2nd to last evil boss you must beat to conquer CONCACAF.

Philip Mayaka via the MLS SuperDraft. Probably the best player in the draft fell to Colorado at pick #3.

Mostly young players and homegrowns from there.

Transfers out:

Sam Nicholson went back to England (he barely played.)

Kei was traded to Minnesota where he's currently out of contract

Abdul Rwatubaye left on a free and is now in Macedonia.

No impact transfers in or out.

Season outlook: Colorado didn't make many moves one way or another. They're looking for a young team to continue to mature. Their back line of Sam Vines, Auston Trusty, Lalas Abubakar, and Kegan Rosenberry is young and super talented. Cole Bassett and Kellyn Acosta are a solid midfield engine. The question is where the goals will come from. Colorado was 7th in the west in goals for. They were 7th on goal differential. I'd predict a playoff appearance for Colorado, but it's hard to see this team competing with the Western Conference elites like Portland, Seattle, and LAFC. Probably somewhere in the 4-6 area for our friends to the west.
