2021 Season Preview: San Jose Earthquakes

Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

**As of the writing of this post, San Jose has already lost a game to Houston 2-1**

The Fighting Wondos San Jose Earthquakes ended their season in the first round of the MLS playoffs by scaring the hell out of Sporting Kansas City at Children's Mercy Park. Perhaps the best news of their offseason was keeping Matias Almeyda. San Jose's man marking system is unique for MLS and creates a chaotic system that is real feast or famine. San Jose was one the receiving end of some epic losses. 7-1 to Seattle. 6-1 to Portland. 5-1 to LAFC. (Editor: Though also, some blowout wins. 4-0 over LA Galaxy. 5-2 over RSL. 3-0 over Vancouver. 4-1 over SKC in 2019.)

2020 Stats:

Leading scorers: Chris Wondolowski (7), Andres Rios (5), Cristian Espinoza (3)

Leading assists: Cristian Espinoza (7), Carlos Fierro (3), multiple players tied (2)

Transfers in:

Eric Remedi was acquired from Atlanta and is expected to play a key role in the midfield.

Luciano Abecasis is a 30 year old RB who was signed from Paraguay on a free.

San Jose didn't spend a lot or many many impact moves in the transfer market

Editor: Don't forget Javier "Chofis" Lopez. He plays the 10 and played for Chivas previously. He looked a little 'soft' during the Houston game but you could see the ability.

Transfers out:

Nick Lima was traded to Austin FC. Lima is controversially a US international and is a solid MLS RB.

Valeri Qazaishvili was a young DP signed in 2017. His contract was declined at the end of last season. He's now playing in the K League.

Magnus Eriksson left midway through last season for an undisclosed fee.

Danny Hoesen has also moved to Austin FC

Season outlook: San Jose's system will lead to a wide variance of results. Looking at their roster, it's hard to see where they truly shine. Jackson Yueill was one of the few standouts of the US U-23 team during Olympic qualifying. Wondo is an ageless wonder and a gift to all of us. I don't know where the goals will come from and how they'll shore up a back line that ships goals like San Jose did last year.
