Sporting KC II announced the signing of forward Rojay Smith on Monday. His addition will become official pending league and federation approval.
From Portmore, Jamaica, Smith was on trial with SKC II in the preseason and saw time in their 2-1 preseason loss against Union Omaha, 60 minutes in their 8-0 win over Baker University and 45 minutes in their 5-0 win against Rockhurst University. According to the formations provided by SKC II’s Twitter, Smith saw time on both wings.
Smith came to the United States in 2016, when he joined Northern Oklahoma College. He added 33 goals and eight assists in 36 games with them in the NJCAA his first two years before transferring to the University of Tampa Bay.
In Tampa Bay, Smith added eight goals and seven assists in 27 games. He led the team with six goals in 2019, earning a spot on the All-Sunshine State Conference second team in his senior season.
At 24 years of age, Smith is the second oldest player under contract with SKC II, though it appears he is among those with the least amount of experience outside of college.
It looks like Smith will mainly play as a winger, likely as an option off the bench more often than not.
His first opportunity in the professional ranks could come this Saturday when Sporting II visit FC Tulsa for their 2021 USL Championship opener. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CST and will be available on ESPN+.
