Kansas City NWSL fought hard versus the Washington Spirit in their first meeting of the inaugural season Saturday night.

Despite some tired legs from playing their third match in a week, KC NWSL started the action on the front foot, leading to an early goal in the 3rd minute. Jessica Silva fed team captain Amy Rodriguez who gave the home side the early lead.

Washington made the score 1-1 through Ashley Sanchez hitting the back of the net in the 78th minute. Rookie Trinity Rodman had the assist.

It was Rodman's turn to find the net In stoppage time, scoring the Spirit’s second and final goal in the 95th minute. Despite a hard fought match for Kansas City, the final score was Washington 2, KC 1.

A bright spot was the debut of KC NWSL first round draft pick, Kiki Pickett. Coach Huw Williams had high praise for her. Kansas City next plays on July 2 against Gotham FC.
