Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has joined the Sporting Kansas City ownership group, the club announced Tuesday. Mahomes joins current owners including the Patterson Family, Cliff Illig, Pat Curran, Greg Maday and Robb Heineman.
The Super Bowl LIV MVP is now part-owner of two major sports teams in Kansas City, previously becoming the owner of the Kansas City Royals almost exactly a year ago. His fiancé, Brittany Matthews, is also co-owner of KC NWSL.
Mahomes became the first addition to the ownership group since the Kansas City Wizards days when Sporting Club, then named OnGoal, LLC, took over for Lamar Hunt and the Hunt Sports Group in 2006.
Already a Super Bowl champion and NFL MVP as a player, the 25-year-old is hoping to become an MLS Cup-winning owner as soon as this year.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love,” Mahomes said via press release. “Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”
Mahomes has been a strong supporter of soccer and Sporting KC since coming to Kansas City after the Chiefs drafted him in 2017. He has attended numerous events at Children’s Mercy Park, many of which have been SKC matches.
“Patrick is a tremendous ambassador for Kansas City and we are delighted to welcome him to the Sporting Club ownership group,” said Cliff Illig, principal owner of Sporting KC. “In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer. Patrick is also accustomed to cultivating a winning culture, and we look forward to contending for championships at Children’s Mercy Park well into the future.”
By joining the Sporting Club ownership group, Mahomes now has ownership in all of SKC’s teams including Sporting KC, Sporting KC II and Sporting KC Academy.
