In their first game since September 5, KC NWSL headed to the East Coast to face the Washington Spirit, the second and last meeting of the season between the two teams. It was the Spirit’s first game in nearly a month after breaking the league’s medical protocols, resulting in back-to-back forfeits.

Kansas City appeared to have the edge early on, with 1-0 lead. Forward Darian Jenkins gave KC the early lead in the 9th minute, with her second goal of the season.

But just before halftime, Washington was awarded a penalty kick due to Kiki Pickett bringing down Kelly O’Hara in the box. The Spirit’s Andi Sullivan covered to tie the game 1-1.

Washington would take the lead soon after the second half. Tara McKeown scored 11 seconds after kick-off, giving the Spirit the 2-1 lead. Kansas City attempted to get the equalizer, but all the efforts were not good enough, and the team’s road game woes continued.

Kansas City returns home for the first of four October matches at Legends Field on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. CT. They will face the Houston Dash.
